Selling into a leadership change
When a company hires a new head of sales, marketing, operations or engineering, the person arrives with a mandate to change something and a short window to show it. That makes a leadership change one of the most reliable triggers in B2B selling, in both directions: a new leader is an opening, and a departing one can put an existing account at risk.
Why new leaders buy
A new leader is judged on what changes under them, not on what they inherited. In their first months they review the team, the process and the tools, and they replace what they do not trust. They also tend to bring the vendors that worked for them before.
That review is the window. Before it, there is no one to talk to. After it, the decisions are made and the budget is committed.
When to reach out
The first weeks are spent listening and learning the business, so a cold pitch on day one rarely lands. Many sellers do better around the end of the first month, when the leader has a view of what is broken and has not yet chosen how to fix it. A short, useful note earlier, with no ask, can make that later message familiar.
What to say to a new leader
Lead with the problem they were hired to solve, not with your product. If the hire was announced, the announcement usually says why. If they came from a company you know, the change they made there is a fair reference. Keep the ask small: a short conversation, a teardown, a benchmark.
When your champion leaves
An executive stepping down is a signal too. If that person bought from you, the account is at risk until you have a relationship with whoever replaces them. Reach the successor early, with what the account has achieved, before the review reaches you. If they bought from a competitor, the same change is your opening.
How Revnox handles leadership changes
- A new leader hired and an executive stepping down are each filed as a signal of their own.
- Each person is placed on the buying committee, and the one to start with is named.
- A call prep brief puts why now, who you are talking to and what you already said on one printable screen.
- The first message is drafted from that research, and each message waits for your approval by default.
Questions
Why is a new executive a sales trigger?
A new leader is expected to change things and usually reviews the team, the process and the tools in the first months, often bringing vendors they trust. That review is a window in which a purchase decision is open.
When should I contact a newly hired executive?
Usually around the end of their first month, after they have learned what is broken and before they have chosen how to fix it. A short note with no ask can come earlier.
