Selling to companies that just raised funding

A funding round is the most visible buying signal there is. The money is raised to be spent, usually on people and on the tools those people need, and the announcement says roughly what it will be spent on. That is also why every seller sees it at once. Using funding well is less about spotting the round than about reading it.

Why a round changes the odds

A company that has just closed a round has three things it did not have the month before: budget, a plan it promised its investors, and a deadline. The plan usually names a direction, such as building a sales team, entering a new market or launching a product line. Each of those directions creates purchases, and most of them happen in the two quarters after the money lands.

The round alone does not say what they will buy. It says the company is about to change, and that a decision maker is open to hearing how. Your job is to work out which change your product serves.

Which rounds are worth acting on

Not every round is the same signal. Read three things before you write:

  • The stage. A seed round funds a product and a first hire or two. A Series A or B usually funds a go-to-market team. Later rounds fund expansion, acquisitions and new markets.
  • The stated use of funds. The announcement or the founder's post usually says it. "To grow our sales team" and "to expand into Europe" lead to different buyers and different messages.
  • Whether it fits your ideal customer profile. A round at a company outside your ICP is news, not a signal. Filter on fit first, then on the event.

When to reach out

The first week after an announcement is the noisiest: the inbox fills with congratulations and pitches. Many teams do better a few weeks later, when the hiring plan is visible in job posts and the new budget owners are in their seats.

A round followed by matching hires is a stronger signal than either alone. A company that raised and then opened three sales development roles is telling you it is building outbound, and roughly when.

What to say

"Congrats on the raise" is the opening every seller uses, so it carries no information. A better first message connects the round to one consequence your product addresses:

  • name the change the round implies, in their words if the announcement gives them;
  • say what usually goes wrong at that moment for teams like theirs;
  • offer one specific, small next step.

Keep it short. The round is the reason you are writing now; it does not have to be the subject of the email.

Common mistakes

  • Treating every funded company as a lead, regardless of fit.
  • Writing to the founder of a company that has just hired a head of the function you sell to.
  • Pitching on announcement day, alongside everyone else.
  • Mentioning the amount raised, which reads as surveillance rather than relevance.

How Revnox handles funding signals

  • Revnox watches the companies you track for funding rounds, hiring, new leaders, product launches, acquisitions and expansion, and keeps the source of every signal it files.
  • Funding plus three SDR roles scores above either alone.
  • Each account is scored against your ideal customer profile, with signal combinations counting for more than any one signal alone.
  • For the strongest accounts it writes a dossier: company overview, pain points and key people, each with its source, plus an outreach angle.
  • The first message is drafted from that research, and each message waits for your approval by default.

Questions

Is a funding round a buying signal?

Yes, when the company fits your ideal customer profile. A round means new budget and a plan to change something, and most of that money is spent in the following two quarters. It is stronger when hiring or other signals line up with it.

How soon after a funding announcement should I reach out?

Often a few weeks after, not on the day. The first week is crowded with congratulations and pitches, and by a few weeks later the hiring plan and the new budget owners are usually visible.
